After a hard fought season, the 9U teams will compete in the season ending playoffs over the last two weeks of the spring season.
Playoff format
- Each team will play 3 preliminary games. Seeding will occur following the completion of all preliminary games.
- Top 4 teams will advance and play on Sunday.
Playoff rules
- If home team is leading at the end of the top of the final innning, they DO NOT take their final bats- The run differential will be based on what has been played.
- Each team will be given two points for a win, one point for a tie and 0 points for a loss.
- Maximum run differential will be +7/-7 runs in each game.
- In the event of a two way tie the following rules will be applied:
- Best Plus/Minus record
- Head to Head if applicable
- Runs Against*: The team with the lowest runs against during round robin play
- Runs For*: The team with the highest amount of runs scored during round robin play
- Coin toss
- Three/Four-way ties will follow the same format as outlined in Rule 29.01. This format will be followed until a winner is declared.
* Runs for and against will be based per innings played. Eg. if your team had 10 runs against in 7 innings, it would be average of 1.4 runs per inning. If the team you are tied with has 10 runs against but in 5 innings, it would be 2 runs per inning average, and your team would win the tie breaker.
Provincial Championship Tiebreaking Rules 29.01 Tiebreaker
The round robin tie breaking rules are set out below.
Please note the following: Statistics are calculated based upon the games between the teams that are tied with each other, and not all of the games in the competition.
If the first part of the rule places one team above others in the case of three or more teams involved in the tie, but the remaining teams are still tied, then the remaining parts of the rule are applied using statistics from the matches involving all of the original teams in the tie.
In the event that a team involved in a tie has forfeited a game played between tied teams they will be automatically eliminated from the tie and the criteria above will be used to determine placement between the remaining teams.
Order
The team with the best win/loss record in the game(s) played between the tied teams will place higher in the standings.
(A) If the tie persists, the placement of teams will be dictated by the ratio of number of runs allowed per defensive inning. A defensive inning is defined as having taken the field and a pitch thrown.
(B) If the tie persists, the placement of teams will be dictated by the ratio of runs scored per offensive inning. An offensive inning is defined as having been at bat for at least one pitch.
(C) If the tie persists, then the team with the best won/loss record against the highest placed team not in the tie, followed by a comparison to the next placed team, etc., will place higher in the standings.
(D) If after the application of the four rules, there still remains a tie, then the four rules will be reapplied to the remaining tied teams, except that the statistics will be based on the games between only the remaining tied teams, and not all of the teams in the original tie.
(E) 11U and under - if a tie persists then the records of all teams in the pool shall be used to determine the tie breaker.
2023 9U Playoffs
First place determined by points - Gators are assigned to Seed 1
Tiebreaker required for Seeds 2, 3 and 4 between Black Sox, Cardinals and Cubs
As none of the three teams played against each other in the round robin phase of playoffs, parts A-D of Rule 29.01 are not applicable as it is only applied for games played that involve the tied teams. As a result, part E will determine the tiebreaker which returns to Part A but uses the data from all 3 games played by all teams involved in the tie.
Part A - If the tie persists, the placement of teams will be dictated by the ratio of number of runs allowed per defensive inning. A defensive inning is defined as having taken the field and a pitch thrown.
Runs allowed | Defensive innings played | Ratio | |
Black Sox | 15 | 14 | 1.071428571 |
Cubs | 19 | 15 | 1.266666667 |
Cardinals | 20 | 14 | 1.428571429 |
- Black Sox have the lowest ratio of number of runs allowed and will be assigned to Seed 2.
- Cubs have the next lowest ratio of number of runs allowed and will be assigned to Seed 3.
- Cardinal has the highest ratio of number of runs allowed and will be assigned to Seed 4.
